There is no reliable citation hack
Google says pages in AI Overviews and AI Mode follow the same fundamental Search requirements and do not need special AI files or schema. OpenAI says public sites can appear in ChatGPT search and explains crawler access, but it does not promise inclusion. These boundaries matter. A page can meet technical requirements and still not be selected. Citation is an external editorial or algorithmic decision, not a setting the publisher can switch on.
Build for the reader who lands on the source. The page should resolve a recognisable question, explain its reasoning, and show where factual claims came from. If the page exists only to produce a quotable sentence, it will usually lack the context that makes the sentence trustworthy. Useful sources survive beyond one interface because people can inspect and apply them directly.
State the answer before surrounding it with detail
Open with a direct summary of the decision the page supports. Use a descriptive title rather than a clever promise. Place the main answer in text and define specialised terms where they first matter. Then organise supporting sections around the questions a careful reader would ask: how it works, when it applies, what evidence supports it, what its limits are and what to do next.
This structure is not written for a robot. It respects attention. A buyer can scan the title, summary and headings to decide whether deeper reading is worthwhile. A sales colleague can link to the exact section that resolves an objection. A retrieval system can work with passages that have a clear topic. The page becomes easier to cite because it is easier to understand, not because it repeats a target phrase.
Match each important claim to suitable evidence
Technical claims should link to official documentation, standards or original research where possible. Claims about your own product should come from maintained product data or public operating policies. Claims about delivered work should be limited to what the client permits and what a visitor can inspect. If a number came from a small internal sample, say so and explain the method. Do not borrow certainty from a source that studied a different market or outcome.
Keep quotations short and use your own analysis to explain relevance. A source list at the bottom is useful, but readers should be able to tell which source supports which part of the argument. Update or remove claims when their source changes. Clear attribution also protects the editorial team from turning an old sales statement into a permanent fact through repeated reuse.
Publish the important material in accessible text
Google recommends making important content available in textual form for AI features. The same choice improves accessibility, translation, search and reuse. A diagram can explain relationships, but it needs a meaningful caption or text alternative. A video can demonstrate a process, but essential specifications should not be trapped inside its audio. A downloadable PDF can support a page, but it should not be the only place where a core product relationship is expressed.
Use semantic HTML and stable internal links. Ensure the canonical page is indexable and not accidentally blocked by the CDN, robots rules or preview controls. Structured data should match what the visitor can see. Avoid rendering the main answer only after an interaction that a crawler may not perform. These are ordinary web quality practices, which is precisely why they remain useful across new discovery interfaces.
Treat citation-ready content as maintained infrastructure
Assign an owner and review trigger to facts that can change. Product availability may update from a catalogue. Service areas may change with operations. Technical guidance may need review when the official documentation changes. A page about a stable principle does not need a cosmetic date refresh, but it should be checked when its cited sources or business implications change.
Measure whether the page supports useful journeys. Look for qualified visits to related product and service pages, source referral patterns and questions raised in enquiries. Do not rewrite a sound answer every week to appear fresh. Improve it when evidence, user need or the offer changes. A page earns long-term citation potential by remaining a reliable source, and it earns business value by helping a real buyer make a better decision.
